If the seller of your purebred dog informed you that your dog is eligible to be registered with the AKC, you should have received a registration application at the time of purchase. If however, you did not receive a registration application when buying your dog, you are entitled to request from your seller a signed bill of sale that provides detailed information on the full identification of your dog in writing. This includes:
- Type of breed
- Date of birth
- Gender
- Colors / markings on the dog
- Registered name and number of the dog’s parents
- If available, the AKC litter number. Please note that your dog will not be eligible for registration until the litter has been registered
- Breeder’s name
- Date of sale / delivery
- Seller’s signature
The AKC recommends that if your seller does not provide you with a registration application or refuses to provide you with the signed bill of sale and full identification of your dog in writing.
Once you have obtained the necessary information, you can apply to register your dog with the AKC through the online application or filling in and mailing the PDF form.
