Proceeds from the event will benefit Pets Unlimited. The new 13,000 square foot back country area allows dogs to run around and play in the largest outdoor, leash-free area in the City.

San Francisco, CA (Vocus/PRWEB) May 17, 2011

On Sunday, May 22nd from 2 to 5 pm Pet Camp will be hosting an open house for its new 13,000 square foot outdoor canine area called the Savannah. Dog owners are welcome to bring their best buddy and join in the fun, games, and prizes. Donations to Pets Unlimited will be accepted at the open house.

The Savannah is landscaped with trees and native grasses. It contains a dry creek bed, a bridge and dunes.

Pets Unlimited is a San Francisco-based animal shelter and veterinary center where a portion of every dollar spent on the care of each pet helps them save the lives of cats and dogs in need throughout the Bay Area.

“We are very appreciative of Pet Camp’s support of our rescue efforts and our charitable veterinary care programs,” said Sally Wortman, Executive Director. “We rely on the generosity of our community partners as well as individual donors to help fund our lifesaving efforts, and we are incredibly grateful to be participating in this event.”

“The dogs here are ecstatic,” said Donohue. “They love being able to run, romp and enjoy the great outdoors in complete safety. Our clients feel good about bringing their pets here. It’s a much better alternative than leaving them stuck inside at home all day.”

Pet Camp is the San Francisco pet boarding facility with the most off-leash, outdoor space for dogs and the only outdoor adventure area for cats in the United States. Pet Camp is the three-time winner of the coveted “Best in the Bay” award selected by the readers of SFGate.com.

For more information about Pet Camp’s services, contact them by phone at (415) 992-7173, visit their website at petcamp.com, or become a fan by clicking on the “like” button on their Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/PetCamp. Pet Camp Cat Safari is located at 3233 Sacramento Street in the Presidio Heights neighborhood of San Francisco.

About Pet Camp
Since opening their doors 13 years ago, Pet Camp has become the premier provider of lodging and dog and cat daycare in San Francisco. (Pet Camp can be found by searching for “San Francisco dog kennel” or “San Francisco cat kennel” on Google, but they think of themselves as more of a “canine and feline lodge.”) They treat dogs and cats to the greatest collection of activities and experience that can be found in the City.

Their canine outdoor play area is the City’s largest outdoor off-leash play area for dogs, and they operate the nation’s only “outdoor” safari experience for feline guests of the San Francisco cat daycare. Pet Camp is the country’s first green certified pet care facility.

OnSpeedDating’s “Puppy Love” Speed Dating
They’ll be no “dogs” at this singles event, but plenty-o dog lovers. Let’s face it, you’re either a dog person or a cat person and quite often the two don’t mix. When cat people start bagging on canines, it’s SO obvious that the real objects of their rage are dog owners, and not the dogs themselves and vice-versa. According to a 2001 survey by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, there are 68 million dog owners in the US. Meet 10-15 of them at our speed dating event and maybe even hook your pooch up.

OnSpeedDating’s “Purrrrrrfect Match” Speed Dating
They’ll be no “dogs” at this singles event, but plenty-o cat lovers.
Let’s face it, you’re either a dog person or a cat person and quite often the two don’t mix. It can sometimes be really challenging finding a good single guy that isn’t allergic or doesn’t straight up hate cats in general yet alone women with cats. Not to mention a recent UK study has scientifically determined that cat owners tend to be more educated than dog owners. Are you really that surprised? According to a 2001 survey by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, there are 89 million cat owners in the US. Meet 10-15 of them at our speed dating event and maybe even find the “cat’s meow”.

OnSpeedDating.com: OnSpeedDating.com (OSD) is an entirely new breed of speed dating. Delivering quality and quantity, the service offers NYC singles niche events themed around dating deal breakers. Think physical preferences, common interests and backgrounds. With the promise of at least 10-25 ‘dates’ per event, singles are sure to have their pick of matches. Admission fees range from $30 to $40 per event.

Since it’s inception in 2006, New York’s Funniest Reporter Show (www.nyfunniestreporter.com) has featured over twenty six media professionals performing stand up comedy in order to raise money for worthy charities that include Operation Uplink and the Humane Society of New York. Participants have come from: NBC, WPIX, Good Morning America, CBS, NY1, Fox News, Star Magazine, ABC, News 12, MSNBC, CNN, The Resident, New York Post, and New York Daily News. Each Reporter does five minutes of stage time and at the end of the show, a winner is declared.

About the Humane Society of New York:
For over 100 years, the Humane Society of New York (http://www.humanesocietyny.org ) has been a presence in New York City, caring for animals in need when illness, injury or homelessness strikes. In 1904 they were founded to protect the city’s horses against abuse. Members fought for laws to punish negligent owners and place watering troughs in streets and parks. As funds allowed the Society to expand, a free medical clinic and a small adoption center for cats and dogs was included. Today their hospital and their Vladimir Horowitz and Wanda Toscanini Horowitz Adoption Center help more than 34,000 dogs and cats annually, and their numbers continue to grow.

More than 25 dogs with names like Gizmo, Handsome Hector, Monkey Man, Rocco, Egar, and Icky are coming to claim the trophy. And Hollywood celebrities are flying in to judge and emcee.

This year’s event will have four judges. Celebrity Vet Karen “Doc” Halligan, Lead Singer for Vertical Horizon Matt Scannell, and That 70’s Show Television Star Christina Moore will join Sonoma-Marin Fair Board Member Brian Sobel. Actor and Comic Jon Reep will emcee.

“It’s crazy how excited everyone is to participate. It’s really become a star-studded event and that’s not even counting the world famous dogs entered in the World’s Ugliest Dog ® Contest,” said Contest Organizer Vicki DeArmon.

The newest judge to be added is Christina Moore who played the less than virtuous sister on the hugely popular That 70’s Show and is starring in the new series HawthoRNe debuting this June on TNT. Matt Scannell is the lead singer for the band Vertical Horizon. The band just released its sixth album Burning The Days.

Karen “Doc” Halligan is a celebrity vet who has appeared on Animal Rescue 911, Dog Tales, Groomer Has It, and Animal Planet and is developing her own syndicated show.
Emcee Jon Reep is an actor and comic. He’s played the crazy farmer “Raymus” in the movie Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, and the dim-witted cop “Gerald Bob” from the ABC Sitcom Rodney. Most people probably know him as Dodge Truck’s popular “Hemi guy”; who leans out of a beat-up car and utters the now famous line: “That thing gotta Hemi?” Reep also won Season 5 of Last Comic Standing on NBC and has appeared on numerous comedy shows.

Model Alison Levie will be featured in the entertaining Ugly is the New Beautiful Fashion Show that happens during the judging breaks at the World’s Ugliest Dog ® Contest. Levie recently appeared as a contestant on America’s Next Top Model and is Miss Sonoma County.

This year’s contest is set for Friday, June 25 at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma and this fun preliminary shows the competitiveness has already begun.

Petaluma, CA (PRWEB) June 19, 2010 — The world loves ugly dogs and a cast of new characters and some old favorites are available for viewing online at the World’s Ugliest Dog ® Voting Gallery located at www.worldsugliestdogcontest.org. This is the official website of the World’s Ugliest Dog ® Contest scheduled for Friday, June 25, 2010 at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California. While the results of the online voting do not effect the outcome of the World’s Ugliest Dog ® Contest, the online gallery is a fun way to get acquainted with the dogs, many of whom are contestants.

So far, there’s Gizmo, Handsome Hector, Mojo, Elvis, Itty Bitty, Ripley, Possom, Icky, Eger, Grovie, Squiggy and others. Previous champions, Rascal from 2002, and the 2009 winner Pabst, are on the gallery as well. Visitors can vote for their favorite. Right now late entry Icky, a 6-month-old contender from Sacramento, California is dominating the boards, closely followed by Handsome Hector, another Californian.

Even though the online voting doesn’t directly affect the voting and offers no prizes, it is still competitive. The World’s Ugliest Dog ® Contest Online Voting Gallery has had a history of hackers tampering with votes which finally was prevented this year by contest organizers. In previous years, contestants’ votes would swell by the hundreds while the webmaster developed new defensive strategies. In 2006, the votes had to be reset to zero and started again midway through because of cheating.

Why the competitiveness? The winner of the World’s Ugliest Dog ® Contest is catapulted into the worldwide spotlight. In 2009, the announcement of Pabst as the winner was rated the top third in the world according to the Associated Press. As a result, contest organizers report entries in the World’s Ugliest Dog ® Contest are up dramatically this year.

“With this kind of fame at stake, it can get competitive,” said contest organizer Vicki DeArmon. “It starts with the online voting gallery and by the time we get to the actual contest, it reaches a fevered pitch with people handing out placards and promotional t-shirts to the crowd.”

The World Champion also takes home $1,000 minimum in prize money along with a trophy and bragging rights and another $1,000 and a year modeling contract with House Of Dog, a manufacturer of upscale dog accessories. The World’s Ugliest Dog ® Contest is produced by the Sonoma-Marin Fair which runs June 23 through 27 in Petaluma, California. For updates on the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest and fair entertainment, visit www.sonoma-marinfair.org.
Pet At Home Sitting Services supports National Dog Bite Prevention Week with a “Doggone Safe Be a Tree” children’s program on Tuesday, May 18.

West Palm Beach, FL (PRWEB) May 11, 2010 — During the third week in May, Doggone Safe Inc., Pet At Home Sitting Services, Inc., “Pet At Home,” and other organizations will be calling attention to one of the nation’s most commonly reported public health problems: dog bites. Half of all children will be bitten by a dog by age 12 and the majority of these bites are by the family dog or other dog known to the child.

Deedra Thompson of Pet At Home Sitting Services will be presenting the “Doggone Safe Be a Tree” children’s program on Tuesday, May 18 at 6:30 p.m. at All Paws Animal Clinic, located at 1011 North State Rd 7, Royal Palm Beach in the Regal Cinema Plaza. Bring your child and learn to be a doggie detective. The class is catered to school age children and there is no charge for the class, but registration is required. Please call All Paws today at 561-790-9225 to reserve a space for your child. One parent is requested to accompany the child.

Doggone Safe, a non-profit organization dedicated to dog bite prevention through education offers free information at its website www.doggonesafe.com to help promote safety messages during dog bite prevention week. Doggone Safe also promotes the “Doggone Safe Be a Tree” children’s program. This program is a short presentation with large photos and lots of activities to teach children to understand the signs dogs send with their body language. The central message of this program is “Be a Tree”. That is, stand still if a strange dog approaches or any dog is threatening or overly frisky. Children learn to be doggie detectives, looking for the clues that dogs give with body language to show how they are feeling.

Doggone Safe and Pet At Home offer the following tips for parents and dog owners to help keep kids safe:

The 3 Most Important Things to Teach Your Kids

Dogs Don’t Like Hugs and Kisses – Teach your kids not to hug or kiss a dog on the face. Hugging the family dog or face-to-face contact are common causes of bites to the face. Instead, teach kids to scratch the dog on the chest or the side of the neck.

Be a Tree if a Strange Dog Approaches – Teach kids to stand still, like a tree. Trees are boring and the dog will eventually go away. This works for strange dogs and anytime the family dog gets too frisky or becomes aggressive.

Never Tease a Dog – and never disturb a dog that’s sleeping, eating or protecting something.

The 2 Most Important Things Parents Can Do

Supervise – Don’t assume your dog is good with kids. If a toddler must interact with your dog, you should have your hands on the dog too. Even if your dog is great with kids and has never bitten – why take a chance?

Train the dog – Take your dog to obedience classes where positive-reinforcement is used. Never pin, shake, choke, hold the dog down or roll the dog over to teach it a lesson. Dogs treated this way are likely to turn their aggression on weaker family members. Involve older children in training the family dog while supervising. Don’t allow children to punish the dog. Condition the dog to enjoy the presence and actions of children using positive experiences.

The 3 Most Important Things Dog Owners can do

Spay or Neuter Your Dog – Neutered pets are calmer, healthier and less likely to be aggressive. Neutering prevents unwanted dogs that may end up in shelters or in less than ideal conditions where they may grow up to be poorly socialized or aggressive.

Condition Your Dog for the World – Give your puppy lots of new positive experiences. Train using positive methods i.e. clicker training.

Supervise Your Dog – Supervise your dog at all times around children. Do not allow children to hug and kiss the dog. If visiting children are bothering your dog, put the dog away or send the children home.

About Pet At Home Sitting Services:

Pet At Home began serving pets in the community in January 2004 and is a family owned professional pet sitting service, insured, bonded, licensed and certified in Pet CPR and First Aid by the America Red Cross. Pet At Home is a proud member of NAPPS, the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters and PSI, Pet Sitters International. They offer professional pet sitting service to pet owners who want their pets treated like members of their family. Beginning a pet sitting service was second nature for the owner and President Deedra Thompson coming from a family that owned and operated a small zoo in Austin, Texas. “Pets are my passion,” and I take the responsibility of caring for them and the security of my client’s home very seriously commented Deedra Thompson. I chose to teach the “Be A Tree” program to protect children from being hurt and to protect our canine friends from being in situations that would cause them to bite. To learn more about Pet At Home Sitting Services, Inc. or to schedule the “Be A Tree” program for a school age group or organization in the West Palm Beach area please call 561-686-2900 or visit its website at http://www.petathome.com.

Yorktown Heights, NY (PRWEB) November 12, 2009 — What do Italian gelato and dogs in festive apparel have in common? They’re both part of a highly original contest that doubles as a fundraiser for the internationally accredited nonprofit guide dog school Guiding Eyes for the Blind, headquartered in Yorktown Heights.

Dog owners across the country are challenged to “unleash their imagination” by conjuring a flavor name of gelato (Italy’s renowned version of ice cream) suggested by the appearance and personality of their canine friend when attired in a party hat or other fun doggie garb. Contest entrants submit their dog’s “flavor name,” an uploaded photograph of their dog in costume, and a $20 entry donation to www.dogsinpartyhats.com. The website includes a full description of the contest, entry procedure and prizes, as well as photographic examples of festively appareled dogs with matching gelato flavor names such as “Marshmallow Fluffer Lover,” “King of the Rocky Road” and “Toasted Almond Joyful.” The contest entry fee goes in its entirety to Guiding Eyes for the Blind as a donation.

The contest entry period ends at midnight EST, November 30, 2009. Twelve winners, to be announced in early January 2010, will each receive:

The high honor of having a gelato Flavor-of-the-Month created by contest sponsor Via Vanti! Restaurant and Gelateria (Mount Kisco, NY) in the spirit of their entry

A professional photographic portrait of their dog in costume, with a framed copy enshrined for a year on a doggie “Wall of Fame” at Via Vanti!

A festive “party dog gift pack” for each winning canine, courtesy of Just Dogs! Gourmet™ (Mount Kisco, NY)

A “Year of Gelato” gift card good for a pint of “amazing” (ZAGAT®) gelato at Via Vanti! (Mount Kisco, NY) for each month of 2010.

“Guiding Eyes for the Blind is a serious enterprise that brings greater hope and freedom to the lives of blind and visually impaired people. But all dogs – whether they be service dogs or pets – bring much joy to their owners, so we see this upbeat initiative as a wonderful fit,” says Lisa Deutsch, Vice President, Marketing and Development at Guiding Eyes.

The “Dogs in Party Hats” contest and fundraiser was conceived by Carla Gambescia, founder and owner of the acclaimed Via Vanti! Restaurant and Gelateria in the historic Mount Kisco, NY train station. “This contest is all about creativity, community and fun,” says Ms Gambescia. “I hope it’s something that parents and kids and even schools will get involved with. There’s still a place for imagination and lightness and frivolity in the world, especially when it helps out a cause like Guiding Eyes.”

Guiding Eyes for the Blind was founded in 1954 to enrich the lives of blind and visually impaired men and women by providing them with the freedom to travel safely, thereby assuring greater independence, dignity and expanded horizons of opportunity. Since that time, Guiding Eyes has become one of the foremost guide dog schools in the world, graduating more than 7,000 guide dog teams. It provides superbly bred Guiding Eyes dogs, professional training and follow-up support services to students at no cost to them, and depends on contributions to fulfill its mission. The comprehensive cost of breeding, raising, preparing, training, and supporting a Guiding Eyes team is $45,000.

Napa Valley, CA (Vocus/PRWEB ) June 4, 2009 — Esser Vineyards, the award-winning California winery owned and run by two generations of the dog-loving Esser family, announced today their creation of the first national “Esser Take Your Dog to Dinner Night”, to be held in restaurants nationwide on Friday, June 26, 2009, in conjunction with Pet Sitters International’s Take Your Dog to Work Day.Together with Take Your Dog to Work Day event organizer, Pet Sitters International, and independent pet food manufacturer Weruva, Esser Vineyards proprietor Manfred Esser has put together an impressive list of dog-friendly restaurants nationwide that will hold Esser Wine Dinners for diners and their dogs, with a portion of the evening’s proceeds going to local shelters or animal rescue operations. Esser Vineyards will be donating their award-winning wines, made by renowned winemaker Paul Moser, to be paired with the cuisine from each participating restaurant for the enjoyment of their pet-owning patrons, while their four-legged friends enjoy a meal donated by Weruva Pet Foods.

Manfred Esser has always been very active and concerned about the welfare of animals, as his relationship with his beloved dachshund, Ludwig, can attest. “Ludwig is part of our family, and is in fact the mascot, and ‘Chairman of the Board’ of our winery. By sponsoring this event, I get to combine my love of fine California wine, gourmet food and, most importantly, raise money for animals that are not as loved and cared for as Ludwig” said Manfred. In addition to the wine donation, Manfred and Ludwig will be auctioning off a two night wine tasting stay at the beautiful Esser Vineyards’ Guest House to raise additional funds for the cause.

First celebrated in 1999, Take Your Dog To Work Day was created to celebrate the great companions dogs make, and to encourage their adoption from humane societies, animal shelters and breed rescue clubs. This annual event encourages employers to experience the value of pets in their workplace for this one special day to promote pet adoptions. With the addition of Esser Take Your Dog To Dinner Night, Esser Vineyards hopes the message will be spread even further, with additional funds raised for shelters that house dogs until they can be adopted into suitable homes.

Esser approached Weruva Pet Foods to become a sponsor because, like Esser Vineyards, they are a small, family-owned company that focuses on quality and who are also dedicated to animal rescue causes. David Forman, founder of Weruva said, “We are thrilled to be part of this unique and exciting opportunity. Grass roots efforts like these tie into our company philosophy. We hope that this will bring more attention to the plights of the animals that are in need of shelter or rescuing.”

April is National Pet First Aid Awareness Month and a great time for all pet owners to learn how best to handle pet accidents and emergencies. Pet Sitters International (PSI) encourages all pet owners to learn what to do if their pet becomes injured.

King, NC (Vocus/PRWEB ) April 10, 2009 — April is National Pet First Aid Awareness Month and a great time for all pet owners to learn how best to handle pet accidents and emergencies. Pet Sitters International (PSI) encourages all pet owners to learn what to do if their pet becomes injured.

Dr. Emily Pointer, DVM, at Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital in New York City, said that the most important aspect pet owners should take away from National Pet First Aid Awareness Month is how critical it is to be prepared.

“An emergency situation can be handled much faster and more appropriately if an owner has resources like a first aid kit and list of important phone numbers (veterinarian, emergency animal hospital and poison control) easily accessible,” Dr. Pointer said.

Just like people, most pet accidents happen in or nearby the home. Examples of the most common pet accidents include toxic ingestion, dog bites, high rise syndrome, ripped toenails, foreign body ingestions with gastrointestinal problems, eye emergencies, broken bones, trouble giving birth and being hit by a car.

Dr. Pointer says that a good way to become prepared for emergencies is to be proactive; think about the most common accidents and then figure out how to prevent these emergencies from arising.

Simple first-aid procedures can be the difference between life and death. Knowing how to apply pressure to a source of bleeding and place a temporary bandage is vital to your pet’s safety, and may even save the life of your pet.

According to the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), 25 percent more pets would survive if just one pet first aid technique were applied prior to getting emergency veterinary care.

“Even after a pet owner has administered first aid, it is extremely important to seek veterinary care as soon as possible,” Dr. Pointer said. “There are many, many emergencies that cannot be managed, even in the initial period, with simple first aid.”

Dr. Pointer advises pet owners to call their veterinarians, an emergency veterinary center or poison control immediately and, above all, remain calm. Panicking will only stress the injured animal.
