Access to Dangerous Materials is Biggest Holiday Pet Safety Hazard In and Around Homes, according to Pet Sitters International

King, NC (Vocus) November 13, 2009 — Pet Sitters International (PSI), the world’s largest educational association for professional pet sitters reports that the biggest pet safety hazard consistently witnessed by pet sitters during the holidays is a pet’s access to dangerous materials in the home that can be easily ingested.

PSI recently surveyed its nearly 8,000 member businesses to determine the top three hazards professional pet sitters encounter during the holidays. More than 10 percent of the association’s members participated in the survey. While the majority of respondents, 63 percent, said that access to dangerous materials was most prevalent, 25 percent cited electrical appliances left on in the home and 24 percent referenced a pet’s access to dangerous plants. Research Shows That Dogs Can Sense When They’re Treated Unfairly

The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reported an experiment conducted by Friederike Range of the University of Vienna to see how animals react to inequity.

For the experiment, Range used dogs that understood the command “paw”, so they would be able to place their paw in the researchers hand (a.k.a “share hands”).  Dogs that refused from the beginning of the experiment and a border collie that tried to lead other dogs were removed from the test, leaving 29 remaining dogs. Children Who Own Pets Have a Better Chance of Fighting Obesity

Deakin University, in Australia, conducted a study amongst about 1,100 children between 5-12 years old, finding that pet ownership could help children to maintain a healther weight and lifestyle.

These children were found to have a better likelihood of staying fit and not becoming overweight or obese if they owned a dog, even if they didn’t regularly walk the dog.  It’s believed that the interaction (i.e. playing) children have with the dog helps to keep the weight off.  These researchers also found from one of their prior studies that “young girls who owned a dog were more physically active by 30 minutes than those without pets“.
